Black and Blue Burgers

Black and Blue Burgers

You know that song “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music? I couldn’t help but sing it the entire time we were making these burgers (with a few lyrical substitutions), because it perfectly captured how I felt. Blackened seasoning, blue cheese, grilling, eating outdoors and being with my family are all things that bring me joy. I love anything using Cajun seasonings, and the cool, creamy, crunchy blue cheese coleslaw on these Black and Blue Burgers provides the perfect contrast to the spicy hot burgers.

When Weber approached me about creating a grilling recipe using their new Weber Q 1200 in Color portable grill, my husband and I both jumped at the idea. You see, we grill all the time. I should really say my husband grills all the time because while I may help, he is truly the “grill master” in our family and he deserves the title. Not only do we grill all Summer long, but Mr. Bites has been known to clear piles of snow off the grill so we can use it in the dead of Winter as well. That’s commitment. With all that in mind, we curiously enough didn’t own a portable grill. Crazy, right? So we happily agreed to receive this Weber grill and try our hand at grilling anywhere and everywhere, rather than just at home.

Black and Blue Burgers

For our first use of the grill (making these burgers), we decided to go for a picnic and bring our brand new puppy, Bennett! Bennett loves to be outside and it was so much fun to all be able to sit down together and have a fun, outdoor meal. I took photos while Mr. Bites grilled up the main course and then we feasted on these burgers (seriously my new favorite dinner) while our puppy happily bounded about in the grass and then curled up in the shade. It was a perfect afternoon.

Both my husband and I were really impressed with the Weber Q 1200 in Color. First of all, I love that you get to pick the color, so if you plan to use it for tailgating you can pick your team color (Go Bills!) or if you’re planning to take it camping or on vacation you can pick your favorite shade (I picked green…it’s my favorite color and our last name). When you’re cooking outdoors it’s usually for something fun, so it’s nice to have a fun color to match! The grill worked beautifully and had a good amount of space for a portable grill. It also has fold-out surfaces on either side to place your food, drink, tools, etc while using the grill, which is handy. I love the optional stand you can get that puts it at the perfect height and also has wheels and a handle to help move it around. We’re going to be using this grill a lot. We already have plans to bring it camping and to football games. My husband travels a lot for work and he even took it on his last work trip because he gets tired of eating out for every meal when staying in a hotel. This way he was able to do some parking lot tailgating with his co-workers and have a “home-cooked” meal while in the field.

Black and Blue Burgers

Hearty beef burgers crusted in spicy Cajun seasonings complemented by cool, creamy, crunchy blue cheese coleslaw!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb raw 95% lean ground beef
  • 1 oz blue cheese crumbles
  • 3 teaspoons blackened seasoning
  • 1 cup dry coleslaw mix
  • 3 tablespoons light blue cheese dressing
  • 4 lettuce leaves
  • 4 hamburger or sandwich buns, I used Wegmans Soft Sandwich Rolls

Instructions

  • Pre-heat your grill.
  • Combine the ground beef and blue cheese crumbles and mix them together until well combined. Form into 4 equal-sized patties. Sprinkle 3/4 teaspoon blackened seasoning over all sides of each patty until coated and rub lightly into the surface of the burger to form an outer crust. Place the patties on the grill and cook to your desired doneness, flipping when needed.
  • Combine the cole slaw mix and blue cheese dressing in a bowl and stir until well coated. Place a lettuce leaf onto the bottom half of the bun and place a cooked burger on top. Put ¼ cup of cole slaw onto each burger and top with the other half of the bun.
